Humidifier Maintenance

What you need to know

You must maintain your humidifier at least once per year or the resulting water leakage will damage your furnace!

• For Carrier, Aprilaire, General or Auto-Flo humidifiers, you must replace the evaporator pad at least once each year. For hard water areas the pad must be replaced twice each heating season. The Carrier model has a separate distribution tray that must be changed along with the pad. If you have a humidifier with a reservoir that holds water, the rotation media needs to be cleaned every three weeks to prevent buildup of harmful minerals and bacteria.

• The humidifier drain hose must be kept clean and free of slime and debris, otherwise the humidifier will overflow and cause damage to your furnace. Check the drain hose after cleaning the humidifier by watching the water flow into the drain.

Energy Services Maintenance

Most people who have humidifiers have them cleaned and maintained yearly by Energy Services. Energy Services replaces the pad, cleans the unit, cleans the drain house and makes sure the unit is operating properly. This service is usually done when the furnace is cleaned and inspected.
