Types of Air Cleaners:
Advantages & Disadvantages - Dust Spot Test Method (Efficiencies) |
Type of Filter |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
| Standard 1" |
(about $.75 to $1.00) |
- Only about 2%-5% efficient
|
| 1" Pleated |
- Cheap to buy (about $5 to $10)
|
- DO NOT USE. restricts air flow too much and will damage furnace
|
| 1”
Electrostatic Air Filter |
- Lowest cost $38-$195
- Fits most existing furnaces
- 45% efficiency in cleaning dust particles 5 microns or larger (what you can see)
- Approx. 15-20% efficiency in removing particles smaller than 5 microns--these are smudging particles
|
- Must wash every 30 days
- Waiting too long to wash filter will cut off airflow, which will damage the furnace and substantially increase heating and cooling costs
|
|
Mechanical Air Cleaner |
|
- Cost of replacement filter is $38-$77 per year
- If homeowner waits too long to replace the filter, most airflow will be cut off and heating/cooling costs will increase substantially.
- Best to change every six months
- If store bought "knock-off" filters repalce every two months
|
|
Electronic Air Cleaner |
- More efficient type of furnace air filter than mechanical type.
- 89% efficiency when clean
- Average 80% efficiency overall. Especially good at removing smudging particles
- Easy to wash in the laundry tub
- Best at removing bacteria and molds
- Best for severe allergies
- Carrier control pack warranty is five years parts and labor
- Does not reduce airflow when it gets overloaded with dirt
|
- Moderately expensive... $890-$995
- Loses efficiency if not washed within 60 days
- Not for persons with allergies to gasses, such as auto fumes when residing near expressway with heavy traffic
- Possible repair expense on some parts when out of warranty
- If not washed often, dirt will build up on blower wheel and the a/c evaporator coil.

|
Infinity Air Purifier |
- Most efficient type of air filter there is
- 99.97% efficient at .3 microns or larger
- early 99.97% efficient at .3 microns and smaller
- Disintegrates & kills bacteria like weapons grade anthrax, viruses. Wow!
- Removes nearly all particles
- Best for allergies to particulates & gasses and asthma patients.
- Does not effect furnace efficiency.
|
- Expensive...$1,250-1685 installed.
- Cost of filter replalcement is between $80-$100 each year
