Correct Humidifier Installation and Tips
What you need to know
The majority of HVAC companies DO NOT properly install humidifiers correctly. Why?
The answer is because companies will do ANYTHING to get your business and use inferior
installation methods. One inferior installation method
is to install a saddle valve between the humidifier water line and the main water line. Saddle
valves fail very quickly, start leaking water and cause water damage.
Energy Services method
In fact, using saddle valves is against nearly all U.S. plumbing codes. Energy
Services installs a far superior and more expensive ball valve. The type of ball valves we use are
up to code and will last longer then saddle valves.
Other notes about proper installation
- First, we install the furnace humidifier and connect the water supply to the hot water pipe.
This means it takes less energy overall for the humidifier to warm the water for humidification.
- Then we connect the humidifier wiring using a special electronic relay. This
turns on the humidifier when the furnace blower turns on. If you
have a Carrier or Bryant furnace, you do not need this relay; the controls come
with the furnace.
- If you do not have a Thermidistat, Edge or Infinity
control we install a control called a humidistat. The humidistat turns on or turns off
the humidifier and is installed either next to the thermostat control or in and on the
return air duct near the furnace.
Tips and Suggestions
- If you do not have a Carrier Infinity,
Performance or Comfort furnace and associated controls it is a good idea to run the
furnace blower motor in mild weather (between 50 and 70 degrees) all the time. There are
many reasons to run the blower and one is because if the blower is not running then your
humidifier will not turn on and your home/business will become dry and uncomfortable.
- If you have a humidistat installed you can manually adjust the humidity percentage to
whatever humidity level you want in your home/business. Most of the time you can set
levels at Medium to Medium High or 35%-45%. You might have to adjust the humidity percentage
lower if you notice condensation building on the interior windows. Condensation typically
happens when the outdoor temperature falls bellow 20 degrees. If you notice condensation
when the temps are above 20 degrees then your structure might be too tight and require
additional equipment like an Energy Recovery
- In the warmer months you should turn the humidistat off or turn the level to lowest setting.
- Most people are constantly adjusting their humidifier during the cold season. If you
do not like to fiddle with the humidifier's humidistat, then ask us about Carrier's
Infinity, Termidistat or Edge controls. These controls
automatically adjust temperature, ventilation, humidity and much more.
